Just by hearing the name, many buyers would pick Nikon over Sony, but you must remember that each camera is unique in its own way. So to help you determine which of these two cameras would best meet your requirements, it is advised that you read through the whole article. So without further ado, let’s jump right into the comparison.

Comparison Overview

I know that not everyone has the time to sit through the whole comparison, so in this section of the article, I’ll be giving you a quick summary of the entire article.

If you are traveling and wish to have a light and portable camera for your shooting, the a5000 and 1 j5 will work perfectly for you. They both feature the portability of compressed digital cameras but have an image quality which is greater than many other compacts by far.

They both deliver great shooting speed which is far beyond what any DSLR on the market is capable of, and offer the versatility of interchangeable lenses. Thanks to their light and portable bodies, the a5000 and the 1 j5 are among the best cameras for on-the-go photography.

The 1 j5 and a5000 have tiltable LCD touchscreens which flip up at an angle of 180-degrees without reducing the density. With this, you can take perfectly framed low angle shots, beautiful self-portraits, and very accurately composed shots.

Both cameras are enabled with Wi-Fi connectivity. This gives you the ability to control your camera wirelessly from your compatible smartphone. You can also edit and share your images with your friends and family. With these Wi-Fi enabled cameras, you don’t have to worry about wires and other issues.

What makes the a5000 special?

The a5000 is built with Wi-Fi connectivity which helps you control your camera with a compatible tablet or smartphone and the PlayMemories Camera Apps. You can snap the shutter, frame your shot on your device’s LCD, and transfer the images directly to your mobile device to edit and upload quickly and easily.

Shoot HD Movies in your choice of normal 60i or cinematic 24p fps, all at Full HD 1920×1080 resolution. The AVCHD codec gives you amazing Blu-ray picture quality while the PC-friendly MP4 codec gives you the ability to compress to smaller 1080/30p files to make uploading to the Internet much easier.

What makes the 1 j5 special?

The Nikon 1 J5 is enabled with a hybrid autofocus system. This has become more regular in the mirroless cameras of today. Many cameras apply either phase or contrast detection technology.

Contrast detection is applied in compact cameras, many mirrorless cameras, and smartphones. It views a picture and decides what level of focus will bring out the best image distinction. Contrast detection is incredibly accurate; however it’s not as fast as phase detection.

The Nikon 1 J5 features a level of accuracy and speed that not even a Digital Single-lens Reflex can match. Its advanced autofocus system uses 105 phase-detect autofocus points to instantly pinpoint and focus on your subject.

With your focus well fixed, the 1 J5 can capture at a mind blowing speed of 60fps continuously. A new Sports Mode upgrades the 1 J5 for fast-action, so you can switch from on-field close-ups to shooting pre-game portraits to without missing any action.

The Nikon 1 J5’s brand new back-side illuminated (BSI) CX-format CMOS image sensor collects more light than a conventional CMOS sensor, empowering low-light capabilities and faster shutter speeds.

Nikon’s new EXPEED 5A image processing guarantees razor-sharp details and smooth tones and also rich colors in every Full HD video and photo. If the light is very low, you can shoot all the way up to ISO 12,800 without having to be afraid of noise —High ISO Noise Reduction piles four separate images for sharp and clean low-light results.

Problems common to both cameras

.Very poor battery power

.No viewfinder LCD framing

.No hotshoe

.Single card slot

Our opinion on the value/price ratio

Nikon and Sony did an amazing job on the pricing. Both cameras are roughly about half a thousand dollars. This seems reasonable for all the quality you are getting. Although their prices often compete with each other, Sony seems to have a wider range of very affordable cameras.

The a5000 is loaded with many features and functions. On top of that, it’s a great camera for beginners, and the price for a camera such as this seems reasonable enough. On the other hand, we have the 1 j5. It’s also a camera which beginners can use, but there are a few differences.

The 1 j5 can be used by those just starting out, but don’t want to begin from the bottom. Those familiar with the brand know than Nikon is popular for its amazing camera quality. Of course no camera is perfect, but overall, the 1 j5 is no doubt Nikon’s best work to date.

Relative brand strengths

Everyone knows that Nikon is an older and bigger brand than Sony. However, Sony is very popular for its mirrorless cameras. First we’ll begin with Nikon. It’s one of the most popular camera brands. Although it has a few mirrorless cameras, Nikon is known as a DSLR camera company. Many Nikon cameras are rather costly, but you can be sure that you are getting your money’s worth. Nikon also seems to have a wider range of 4k video cameras than Sony. Nikon is also popular for its great image quality.

Next, we have Sony. It seems to be the direct opposite of Nikon, as it is known for its mirrorless cameras. Sony is also popular for its affordable and easy-to-use cameras. It’s the world’s largest supplier of image sensors. If you are buying something from Sony, you can be sure that it is good quality.

Sony a5000 unique cons

LCD has no touchscreen

This is one major setback which Sony is yet to address. It’s really annoying. A mirroless camera which is packed with so many capabilities is expected to have a touchscreen. Hopefully Sony’s future models will be different.

Not weather proof

That’s right. The a5000 isn’t weather sealed. If you are looking for camera like the a5000 which you can use to shoot videos and photos in harsh environments, you should probably consider this.

Environments with dust and moisture can really affect the functionality of the a5000 badly, so if you are looking for a camera which is designed for photographing in enviroments with moisture and dust, the a5000 is not really the best pick.

Nikon 1 j5 unique cons

Body is a bit too compact

One of the downsides to the Nikon 1 j5 is its small body. Because of its small size, this camera can be a bit difficult to handle. The buttons are packed closely together which means that you might mistakenly press one that you do not wish to.
